A step-up onto a box holding one kettlebell at your side, in the hand opposite the stepping leg. Builds single-leg strength in the quads and glutes and trains side-to-side control.

Also known as: Kettlebell Step Up, Single Kettlebell Step-Up, Kettlebell Box Step-Up

How to do the Kettlebell Step-Up

  1. Hold a kettlebell at your side, opposite foot flat on the box.
  2. Push through that foot to lift your body up onto the box, standing tall.
  3. Carefully step back down with the other foot, returning to the starting position.
  4. Finish reps, then switch sides.
Full technique — 7 steps
  1. Stand facing a box with a kettlebell hanging at your side in one hand.
  2. Place the opposite foot flat on the box, so the kettlebell hangs on the side of the leg that stays down.
  3. Lean slightly forward over the working leg and tighten your stomach.
  4. Drive through the whole planted foot to raise your body onto the box.
  5. Bring the trailing foot up beside it and finish tall with both knees straight.
  6. Step down with the trailing foot first, then the working foot, under control.
  7. Complete all reps on one side, then move the kettlebell to the other hand and switch legs.
