A full sit-up done with the soles of your feet together and your knees open to the sides. The open-knee position reduces the push from the hip flexors, so the abs do more of the work of lifting your torso.

Also known as: Ab Mat Sit-Up, AbMat Sit-Up

How to do the Butterfly Sit-Up

  1. Soles of your feet together, knees open, fingertips behind head.
  2. Lie back under control until your shoulders touch the floor.
  3. Exhale and sit up until your torso is near upright.
  4. Lower slowly back to the floor, feet staying together.
Full technique — 7 steps

  2. Place a small pad or folded mat under your lower back if you want support through the full range.
  3. Put your fingertips lightly behind your head with your elbows out to the sides.
  4. Lie back under control until your shoulders touch the floor.
  5. Exhale and sit up by bringing your ribs toward your hips, leading with your chest rather than your hands.
