How to do the Smith Machine Bulgarian Split Squat

  1. Set the Smith bar at upper-back height and stand in a split stance with one foot forward.
  2. Place your back foot behind you on the floor or a low support, keeping most of your weight on the front leg.
  3. Unrack the bar and brace your core with your torso tall.
  4. Lower under control by bending the front knee and hip until your back knee nears the floor.
  5. Drive through the front foot to stand back up along the Smith machine path.
  6. Finish tall with the front leg extended and hips level.
  7. Reset your stance before the next rep, then switch sides after the set.

Common mistakes

  • Taking too short a stance and crowding the front knee.
  • Letting the front heel lift during the descent or drive.
  • Leaning forward and turning the movement into a hinge.
  • Pushing off the back leg instead of loading the front leg.
  • Rushing the bottom position and losing control of the bar path.

Form cues

  • Front foot stays planted
  • Knee tracks over toes
  • Stay tall through torso
  • Use a controlled descent
  • Push the floor away
