# Barbell Muscle Clean

An Olympic-style lift that takes a barbell from the floor to the front of your shoulders without dropping into a squat. Your legs and hips drive the bar up, then your elbows turn quickly under it while your knees stay nearly straight.

5. Stand tall, then lower the bar back to the floor.

### Full technique — 8 steps

1. Stand with feet about hip width apart and the bar positioned over the middle of your foot.
2. Squat down and take an overhand grip about shoulder width, just outside your knees.
3. Keep your back flat, your arms straight, and your shoulders slightly over the bar.
4. Push through the floor to break the bar from the ground, keeping your hips and chest rising together.
5. As the bar passes your knees, violently extend your hips and knees, then shrug as the bar accelerates upward.
6. Pull your elbows up and out, keeping the bar close to your body as it rises.
7. Turn your elbows quickly under the bar and receive it across the front of your shoulders with your knees nearly straight.
8. Stand tall with hips and knees fully extended, then lower the bar under control to the floor.

- Dropping into a squat to catch
